Purpose:
The Alberta Sport, Recreation, Parks and Wildlife Foundation (ASRPWF) is soliciting requests for
proposals for new initiatives to support provincial active living priorities in 2011-12.
Background:
The ASRPWF and Alberta Tourism, Parks and Recreation have a mandate to promote “active living” in Alberta. Active living describes a way of life in which physical activity is valued and integrated into daily living. Applying a “population health” approach to physical activity promotion recognizes that there are a range of factors which influence whether or not we are active on a regular basis. Educating about physical activity, increasing access to participation opportunities, and developing supportive social and physical environments where Albertans live, learn, work, commute and play, are all necessary strategies to enable active choices. Federal and provincial/territorial governments across Canada recognize the health, social and economic benefits of a physically active population and have set targets to increase physical activity levels for both adults and children.
Priorities in 2011-2012:
In 2011-12 the ASRPWF will support projects that address the after school time period for children and youth, (conditions/ factors that support physical activity, as well as contribute to achieving targets aimed at increasing the proportion of Albertans who are physically active.)
Projects should link to the following broad priority areas:
• Partnership development and community linkages
• Awareness and education
• Promising practices
• Research, surveillance and evaluation
• Designing for inclusion (addressing barriers or disparities)
• Healthy public policy Criteria for Project Selection
Priority will be given to proposals that indicate that the project will:
• Support at least one of the funding priorities as outlined above;
• Be evidence-driven (ie. build on or incorporate research/ best or promising practices/extensive community experience or cultural knowledge);
• Demonstrate a need for the project within Alberta (ideally through the support of key
stakeholders or partners);
• Commit to an evaluation plan and reporting component showing impact of project on
behaviors, or changes to the environment;
• Demonstrate if relevant, a strategy for achieving self-sufficiency after the funding concludes;
• Communicate key learnings and outcomes of the project through various dissemination
mechanisms.
Application Process and Timelines:
Proposals should not exceed four pages. Please include the following:
• Project Title
• Rationale (describing the problem/opportunity, potential population impact, evidence that supports need or recommended approach)
• Statement of Purpose (outlining the project scope, intended outcome(s), and target
audience)
• Objectives (time-limited, concrete and measurable changes due to the project)
• Implementation (identifying proposed actions and timelines)
• Budget (identifying revenues, expenses, and in-kind support)
• Evaluation Plan (identify how you will evaluate the project and share key learnings)
• Project Team (including partners/collaborating organizations).
