Providing safe and secure communities is one of the Government of Alberta’s priorities. The Safe Communities Innovation Fund (“SCIF”) is part of the government’s response to reducing and preventing crime in Alberta.
The Indigenous Sport Council (Alberta) is seeking up to five communities/ organizations that may be interested in partnering in a pilot project through this program.
The Indigenous Sport Council (Alberta) is aware that all communities potentially face similar issues to some degrees but a more focused approach over a 2-3 year period can begin to see change occur with respect to lifestyle choices.
The pilot project entitled “The Future is Now” is intended to enhance youth capacity and self esteem through promoting and developing the physical, spiritual, cultural, and mental health, of youth aged 6-18 residing in Metis Settlement and First Nation communities facing issues of substance abuse, violence and high risk behaviours.
Components of the pilot project include:
- Funding of a Community Recreation Leader in the partners community up to $1200.00 per month for a three year period.
- Training for the Community Recreation Leaders will include the implementation of a three week Recreation Leadership Program that will provide skills and tools to enable community leaders to develop programs and services in their communities in the areas of sport, recreation and cultural activities.
- Staff from ISCA will work with the Community Recreation Leader to provide ongoing support.
The expectation from the partnering community organization is to provide services in kind such as office space, facilities etc.. Interested partners would need to sign a partnership letter. The ISCA has developed a draft for this purpose.
All interested communities/ organizations must confirm there interest by Monday October 25, 2010.
